GentleLase® Laser Hair Removal

There are many forms of hair removal methods to rid unwanted hair. However, many of the methods are temporary. Currently, lasers are the best method of treatment for permanent hair reduction. Here in the office, we use  GentleLase® which has a long pulse system to target pigment in the hair follicle and destroys the hair shaft. Since hair has growing cycles, a series of treatments will produce desired results.

Pre-Procedure

Prior to laser hair removal, ONLY shave the area you would like treated (no waxing, plucking, or epilation). This is because other methods of hair removal damage the hair follicle, rendering the laser less effective. Shave at least 3 days before your procedure for the process to be more effective and less painful. Over-the-counter numbing cream may be applied 1 hour before coming to the appointment if pain is a concern. Avoid sun exposure for at least 6 weeks to minimize the risk of hyperpigmentation.

During the Procedure

As this is a medical-grade laser treatment, details of every procedure are reviewed with an M.D. prior to beginning. At the first appointment, Dr. Hubbard provides a free consultation to determine the optimal settings for your individual skin tone and hair type. The sensation of the laser is often described as a hot rubber band snap, followed by a cooling sensation of liquid nitrogen to increase tolerability.

Post-procedure

Some minor redness and follicular irritation may be expected following the procedure. Occasionally a hive-like reaction may occur, lasting no more than 24 hours and this may be treated with Zyrtec or similar over-the-counter anti-histamines. Patients are encouraged to avoid sun exposure for 6 weeks following the procedure. Otherwise, there are no activity restrictions or otherwise.
